My new employee started today, and did pretty good. Made me, as usual, try to catalog what it is, exactly, that we do, and how. Beyond that work involved a hunt for some missing (expensive!) tools, which our employee that quit on Friday forgot somewhere. We considered scolding him, but... Well, he already quit, so we didn't see much point, in particular since we found the missing toolbag eventually, and we know he didn't do it on purpose.
We began to install our gear in the business expansion building, which now has a first and a second floor. The elevator between the old and new business building, however, has floors from 1 to 4. 1 is the ground foor of the old building. 2 is the ground floor of the new building. 3 is the second floor of the old building, and 4 is the third floor of the old building and second floor of the new building (labeled 3/2 on the outside of the elevator, or 1.5 to us decimal lovers.) Confused yet? We think they have to put some sort of a map or guide next to the buttons pretty quickly. It's also one of those elevators that has multiple doors, so you never know which side you're supposed to exit at a given floor.
Anyhow, all the switches are in and interconnected, and most of the wireless APs for the first floor (of the new building, 2 if you take the elevator) are in and hooked up as well. The remaining ones probably require a 12' ladder, which makes me really eager not to be the one climbing! I'm having trouble on top of our 8' one!
Tomorrow we start with the patch cables and install the APs for the second floor (4 if you take the elevator). We'll probably finish it by the end of tomorrow.
I also get to convince the IT innovation team that web-VPNs are a great idea that doesn't work worth squat in real life, and they should forget about it. I have the release notes for the latest software release for our concentrator, and the ten or so pages of things that are known to not work should help with my task.
Random thoughts about the weekend... MegaCon was nice, though had less stuff that I cared about than last year, I felt. Of course I've always gone to it--and most other conventions for that matter--alone; this time I was with a group of people, and that made a pretty big difference. I am being corrupted by

Now, time to prepare for my class presentation about globalization's effect on democracy. Taxes are done, H&R Block is richer and happier for it, but on the flip side, the return will more or less pay for my monitor and suit. The weather is nice and cool, after a cloudy and drizzly day, and there's a steaming mug of Harney's hot cinnamon tea in front of me.
