Over the Christmas holidays I ended up being sick for a few days, and used it as an excuse to pick up a ton of books from Mojo on Fletcher, in this case all five books of Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War series.

It takes place in a universe very similar to her Serrano books, reviewed earlier, but either a different time period or parallel world. Over the course of the books a war brews, starts, is fought, and ends. Much like the Serrano books this series is one integral work, and there's no point whatsoever in trying to read the individual books on their own.

The universe has faster-than-light travel, many worlds, ansible communications and pretty much all the trappings of your typical space opera. There isn't too much depth to the work, and much less social commentary than the Serrano series, which is to say very little. However, it's very entertaining space opera following the at times rather unlikely adventures and successes the protagonist, a daughter of a powerful and rich trading family facing ruin. The villains are villainous, the heroes are heroic, and there's fairly little in between.

For all that the literary critic, physicist and political science major in me finds this series lacking, it was very engaging, well-written feel-good space fantasy that made a cold much more bearable. It would make a great anime or maybe even live action miniseries.

3.5/5.
