I caught the movie 9 at an early showing this morning. I have to admit that pretty much all the reviews I read were right; the visuals were outstanding. As far as the acting capability of the virtual little people goes, there was little to be left to be desired. I had never thought an aperture could be so cute and full of life.
Unfortunately, as typical recently, the writers and director were MIA. The story was very weak -- the basic yarn was very typical and predictable, which wouldn't have been so bad if there was even an attempt to make it interesting or add dressing to it, but there wasn't. The actions and dialogue of the virtual actors was occasionally face-palmingly embarrassing -- though still significantly better than in a number of recent blockbusters -- and the use to which the emotional range they could express was put was rather a bit off.
The result, then, is a children's movie that doesn't really have enough meat on its bones or depth to be entertaining to adults, set in a post-apocalyptic setting that's a bit too stark for children.
It's still worth seeing (though maybe not at a full price ticket) for the visuals. I can only hope that in the future there will be a collaboration between Shane Acker and a better director / script.
That, and I have a crush on 7.
