I share your burden of (occasionally excessive? :) analysis.
Amusingly, I arrived at the same conclusion a few months ago when replacing my old water bottle through an eerily similar process, and also ended up with the same exact bottle, bought at Target (mine is blue).
Unfortunately I swagged one critical value - its height - for use in my car, and it doesn't quite fit into my door cup holder area, my preferred storage spot. ;)
Heh! Well, mine's blue, and bought from Target :-) My cup holder is kind of useless, not sure how they updated the design. It's nice and basic, but basically just a cup-shaped indent in the console, and not all that deep. The shape of the bottle doesn't help, but any bottle that's skinny enough to fit into the cup holder will topple over at a turn. The short Zephyrhill bottles are about the only ones that work there. Or ones that are just the right size that I can jam them in there and use the forces of friction to my advantage. I'll pretend that the idea that I turn slower doesn't exist.
