Authorness
Feb. 9th, 2005 03:03 pmWent to the panel and reception with Joe Haldeman, Harry Harrison and Piers Anthony. I've never really gotten into Mr. Anthony's work, but judging by the crowd at the reception he had about five times the popularity of the other two put together. I wish I had my Finnish version of their books handy, to have them signed.
Anyhow, the panel was quite nice, with the three sharing anecdotes, speaking of their inspiration and careers, and responding quite eagerly and lively to audience questions, including advice to aspiring science-fiction authors. The different personalities of the three came fairly well out too. Humility wasn't anyone's forte, though. Personally I fear that many of the authors that are big names tend to see their work rather go downhill, since nobody has the clout to tell them to go rewrite it again.
One interesting tidbit was that Joe Haldeman writes all his books with a fountain pen in notebooks in longhand, usually between 3 and 6 am on his porch, and then later transcribes it onto a computer.
I'm again reminded why USF is neater than the University of Oulu. There are, thanks to cultural and geographic realities, more interesting speakers here. Thank you, USF!
