MegaCon

So, having to get up at 3 am for work didn't end up keeping me from attending MegaCon. On the upside, since I got there late, there was hardly any line left at the ticket booths! I toured the dealer's room in (futile) search of Crest of the Stars / Banner of the Stars patches (or other odds and ends). I still need to find someone in Japan that can get these, apparently. Dice dealers were predictably there, so I got two more sets. One is earmarked for work, a symbolic victory set that I can keep on my desk in the new department where gamers / sci-fi fans aren't treated like some exotic and potentially dangerous animal.

A totally unexpected but eminently nifty gadget that I ended up buying though was the Banner Badge. It looks a bit silly on their web site, but was an unmitigated hit at MegaCon. Everyone who wasn't walking around wearing one was asking where to get them from. At a convention price of $50 for the badge and programming kit I ended up hesitating and passing the salesguy, but turned back two booths later and shelled out the money. It looks really good in real life, and the text on it is very readable. I figured that for conventions I will have it scroll the address for my picture gallery, and it's the best way I've found so far to let people know where pictures of them might eventually show up. It has an obscenely strong magnetic clip so you can attach it to your clothing without poking pins through anything, is surprisingly thin, and just works amazingly well. Suggestions for innovative non-convention uses for this gizmo are welcomed ;-)

After the con I ended up hanging out with Darin and some of his more stunning friends at Pointe Orlando, and had a good time. (As did the storm troopers that were on the bar-hopping circuit there, taking full advantage of their costumes.) Overall a really nice day. And, I got back only 23 hours after waking up... I'm getting a bit old for this, really.

Sunday was spent lounging about, sorting through the obscene number of pictures I had taken Saturday, got to watch more Noir (the anime series), got to watch Gunslinger Girl (the anime series), and was happy with both. I also got the last installment of Haibane Renmei, but haven't watched it yet. My roommate fears it'll give him terminal depression, which is unfortunate because I really love the series. Finally, I did get my Crest of the Stars collection, which I got at a really good price off of an Amazon Marketplace seller. $30 for a four DVDs gets to be around the price I think is reasonable ;-)
