I'm probably going to be heading to Key West next week. Can anyone give me recommendations on places to stay? It's only a day trip and an overnight stay, so the hotel could conceivably be on one of the nearer keys or even on the mainland. The place doesn't need to be fancy at all, but it needs to be good, clean and safe.

I can't recc a hotel, but you might want to try to get one close to Key West. It's a hella long drive made longer by wonky changing speed limits.

Also, as long as you're in Key West make sure to catch a drag show :D Because that's pretty much all there is to do there. Outside of buying vaguely offensive, overpriced T-shirts

How long do you think it takes to get to Key West from the mainland? I've heard wildly varying versions, and if it takes excessively long, I might just skip that and go to South Beach and Vizcaya instead.

But certainly, any must sees or recommendations for programming there are also welcomed, since I've never been and have no clue!

From the mainland I want to say it's a 2 hour drive, but that's a rough guesstimate and I could be totally off . . . What I do know is that KW is at the ass end of the Keys and it takes a bit to get to the first keys from the mainland

Don't have any entertainment reccs . . . But there's a bunch of pubs and bars and restaraunts :D And the drive over the three mile bridge is pretty neat

I'm fairly certain that when I visited I stayed here. It was clean, the cheapest I'd found rate wise, and fairly close to the fun.

It was neat, and cheap, but their waiting list was a bit too long. Next time!

My family always stays on Marathon Key, it's not too far from Key West and the prices are pretty good. Moreover, it's not as busy as Key West, therefore not as crazy and crowded at the beaches and resturants but still within a quick drive of all the touristy stuff on Key West. On the off season, you might be able to find some pretty good deals, maybe even rent a condo for the weekend.

Though I have no idea what Key West has become since the 5 or 6 years since I've been back, El Meson de Pepe in Mallory Square has awesome Cuban food, and the conch fritter stand outside the Aquarium (I think that's where it is) has the best fritters you're likely to find. Wherever you end up staying, be sure to take lots of pictures of my old home town!
