I really like this series! (and I think the subsequent books live up to the first one, or may even be better).
I've not heard of the Gaiman comparison, but would say Holly Black is both my favorite and objectively the best writer of YA fantasy I've read. This series is my favorite, but I've liked everything else I've tried by her, too -- The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, Tithe and sequels, and her short stories are really strong, too.
