The non-chalant attitude towards metadata is one of the many things bothering me; considering the idea of a data retention period a non-starter and battle already lost is another. There's no technical reason, or in my mind good procedural reason either, to mandate that all data older than X must be destroyed unless involved in an active investigation, for example.
Of course, the "I have nothing to hide" attitude makes a lot of this moot, as does the assurance of secret procedures that protect us.
