Things I Love about my Macbook Pro
May. 19th, 2010 10:28 pmSo here's the good. I'm sure you can tell there will be a companion posting :-)
- It's crazy fast. With the solid state drive, it boots in about fifteen seconds — and the majority of that is the equivalent of the BIOS check.
- The exterior quality is stunning. Everything is solid, fits together, looks neat, feels good. All the LEDs have been hidden so they can't even be seen from the brushed aluminum until they're illuminated. It's much thinner and lighter than my Dell D830.
- The touchpad and gestures are awesome, and I probably haven't figured out nearly everything that I can do with it (though I still miss my control stick.)
- The screen (anti-glare) is bright and just looks gorgeous.
- There's a lot of neat stuff that comes ready-to-go out of the box. Exchange compatible mail, AIM compatible video chat, X11, ssh, translation widget...
- The charger is much smaller than the Dell one, and better designed overall. The 90 degree MagSafe power connector is a work of genius — and there I had thought the original MagSafe was clever.
- The way the lid closes and opens, and things pick up right from where you left off works amazingly well. The idea of having to push a button, or select a menu entry, or shut down your laptop is gone. You just close the lid and go, then open it when you want to do something again.
- The wireless (5 GHz 802.11n) is far superior to that in my Dell; At my dining room table where the Dell had fallen down to 40-100 Mbps data rates and would occasionally lose connection, the Macbook is solid at the full 300 Mbps.
- The built-in camera is pretty neat and unobtrusive.
- Backlit keyboard! I wanted one ever since I saw it in the Macbook Pro two generations ago, and it is awesome. They keyboard feel is great too; typing feels natural and easy, and I hardly ever hit the wrong key by accident.
