Happiness...
Dec. 28th, 2009 11:44 amis a book that you finish reading through the night even though you know it will result in a totally sleep-deprived day at work.
I got this book since I had liked Briggs' Cry Wolf and it alluded to a plotline here. Chronologically this actually comes before Cry Wolf, but since the primary characters aren't related it doesn't much matter.
So, yet again with that paranormal romance with a strong female protagonist. Except, despite the cover, it really isn't. Yes, the protagonist likes her muscle-bound werewolves, but there's no romance and no making out at all, and few gushing descriptions of handsome men. Instead, it's much more of a straightforward supernatural murder mystery / action romp, closer to Tanya Huff's works in tone. The urban fantasy element isn't exactly novel, with fae, vampires, werewolves, witches and skin-walkers -- although the inclusion of native American mythos is always nice -- but it's just a well-crafted novel with catchy characters, a good and expertly paced plot and quality writing. Four out of five, if not all five.
