Work rant:
When attempting to figure out the fiber optic communication infrastructure in an unknown building, there are a few factors to consider.
1) It helps if all the measurement, cleaning and tracing tools aren't missing from the tool cabinet.
2) It helps if the patch cords you're using to hook things up and figure out the topology all work and don't contain random broken ones.
3) It helps if the installed cable itself isn't randomly broken.
4) It helps if the fiber plant is labeled according to a common standard.
5) It helps if both ends of a run in the fiber plant are arranged using the same logic.
5.1) If you go tow-down, then left-right on one end, don't go left-right then top-down on the other end.
5.2) If you use horizontal bulkheads on one end, don't use vertical ones on the other end.
5.3) If you use interleaved bulkheads on one end, use them on the other end too.
6) It helps to have a key to locked LIU cabinets.
7) It helps if the building follows a proper structured wiring model with a central hub.
8) It actually does help to use lasers in visible spectrum so you can see them with the remaining eye.
9) It helps if you can traverse the four floors and two wings with conveniently located elevators or stair wells, as opposed to ones found on the other end of the building.
