Vista Rant
Dec. 28th, 2007 03:28 pmI've been one of the few people I know of that actually likes Vista. It has problems, for sure, the compatibility and resource-hogginess among the primary ones. That being said, here are my biggest gripes so far -- specifically for the 64-bit version.
iTunes won't work. Well, it works for the most part, but the CD functionality doesn't, and it results in an annoying "I'm broken! Reinstall me!" pop-up every time I start it. It claims it can't see the CD-ROM, but it sees the tracks on inserted CDs and plays and rips just fine... Well, this really is a 64-bit problem and Apple's fault, but a bit annoying nonetheless.
One of the neatest features is the codec functionality of file explorer -- the file formats it understands for tags, previews, thumbnails etc. can be extended by installing codecs. Specifically this means that the OS will natively understand the NEF format images from my digital camera. The problem is that Nikon will only provide a 32-bit version, and for some reason the codec is 32/64-bit specific -- so I can't use this either. Again, more Nikon's fault than Microsoft's.
Today's aggravation however is the biggest to date. Apparently Vista has the most advanced color management evar. Unfortunately it doesn't work. I calibrate the monitor with my Spyder 2, and the calibrated profile 1) doesn't load right 2) vanishes in about half a second after loading. After a lot of head-wall interaction, it turns out that a lot of Vista video drivers are borken and don't properly support profile loads, and that Vista is endemic in resetting the profiles whenever it does power save, UAP's, changes resolutions, or a butterfly flaps its wings. I finally managed to find a version of Intel video drivers that actually allow me to load the profile, but still, WTF Microsoft. This is an absolute deal-breaker for anyone working with graphics! Are you trying to give away business to Apple?
