Vegas Update
Jul. 31st, 2007 12:58 amThe flight from Atlanta to Vegas was late by close to two hours, but it was smooth and comfortable, and I ended up finishing Deathly Hallows on the plane. I wasn't alone -- there were half a dozen people on both flights and at every gate reading the hard-cover edition.
I couldn't find my Dramamine before I left, so I was stuck buying some in Atlanta (Tampa's airport store was out of Dramamine. D'oh!) Consequently, I was pretty much knocked out, and once I got to the hotel, I keeled over.
Mind you, the keeling over was quite comfortable. Caesar's Palace was out of my reserved room type, so I got an upgrade. Pictures to come. Let's just say "big", "view", "marble" and "jacuzzi." That being said, I've come to suspect that there is presently more marble in Vegas than there has been throughout history in all of Italy.
The first day of Black Hat went well. While it isn't humongous, it's respectably large. The daily schedule is class from 8 am to 6 pm, with breaks for coffee and lunch. I opted for a two-day "TCP/IP Weapons" class which essentially goes through a ton of ways of exploiting the OSI stack from layer two on up, both in theory and with hands-on exercises. I'm learning a lot, the presenter is great and the course material is well organized. It's an expensive class, but I'd be tempted to say it's worth the money.
Black Hat shares with Networkers a total lack of diversity. If you want white or Asian guys, you're set. My class of 60 has two women; among the men three are not of the aforementioned ethnicities.
The temperature outside is 105 degrees. Inside it's in the high 60s. There are people with sweaters and blankets on the convention levels.
I may check in quickly tomorrow, but there's no Internet access at the convention and my phone's data connection doesn't seem to work for a change, so if anyone needs to get hold of me, text messaging is the best way. Wednesday morning I'll head off to Arizona.
