Anime Update
May. 20th, 2007 12:14 amI've been watching:
I'm not too fond of El Cazador de la Bruja; it follows Madlax and Noir in theme and style, but so far hasn't shaped up to be as good as its predecessors. Death Note is interesting in that the plot isn't exactly feel good, but the characters are interesting and the plot is surprising and pretty dark. Moonlight Mile has been so far so good, we'll see how that shapes up; Rocket Girls is also about space exploration, but where Moonlight Mile takes itself seriously, Rocket Girls absolutely doesn't.
But there is one more series not in that list: Guardian of the Sacret Spirit (Seirei no Moribito, 精霊の守り人). I had read one review for it, and the reviewer was very positive indeed. Wikipedia mentions that the books (not manga) on which the series is based have been licensed by Scholastic, which is pretty impressive considering the vanishing amount of translated Japanese literature, let alone in the young adult genre. Also, the director is of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex fame, so I had reasonable expectations. I settled down and figured I'd watch the first episode.
And so I did. And that's why I'm writing this entry in the first place. I love the animation! Whatever "it" is that Miyazaki has in his works is present here as well -- not to the same extent, it still being a television series, but present even so. Gorgeous backgrounds, subtle touches, wonderful use of light, a beautiful sound track and a world and characters that immediately become people. I'll catch up with the remaining released episodes and I hope the quality continues and the series grows up to its promise, but for now I absolutely have to recommend this series to any anime fan.
