Apart from [livejournal.com profile] moonwolf's mom's birthday at a greek restaurant, gaming and seeing friends, all of which were a blast, I saw Children of Men this weekend. I knew what I had heard on NPR about it, and the ads: mankind in 2009 became infertile, and now it's 2027, with population aging, chaos reigning and no people under 18 in existence.

I greatly enjoyed the movie. It was bleak, and certainly earns its R rating. It takes a few cheap shots at the US War on Terror, but apart from these it deals with the birth and realities of a police state, a bit in the vein of The Siege. Children of Men also reflects on what it is to be human and on hope -- the latter being one of the main themes of the work, according to its director in the interview. It is an emotionally engaging and intensive work; not exactly a good choice for a date flick.

Children of Men has great acting and writing, and the sense of realism is amazing throughout the film. While it is advertised as the new Bladerunner, I'm not sure I would endorse that comparison. It portrays the little details of life in the future similarly well, but the feel of the movie is quite different. It is a visual masterpiece, a study of greys and an urban battlefield. The way the film portrays violence struck me as one of the most belieavable depictions since Saving Private Ryan. This is a movie of substance, realized with technical mastery. It is not just another Sci-Fi or action movie, but one that will be remembered years from now.
