My previous pocketcam was a Canon, and I rather liked it. The PowerShot series, whether A, S or SD tend to be my first recommendations when people ask me for advice -- they also excel in having accessories available to them. The ability to take AA batteries is a very good point I didn't mention, and that in addition to the memory and longer range zoom are obvious reasons why one might want to go for a different camera. It all depends on the likes and needs of the individual! (I personally take smaller proprietary batteries due to size and weight, but suffer the hurt on the wallet if I ever need to replace them, and missing out on the option of just buying a replacement battery from the nearest 7/11 in a pinch.)
