Random Stuff, as Always

Okonomiyaki is yummy. Take pancake mix, add shredded cabbage, and make it available to people. They can then add whatever they want; mushrooms, chives, shrimp, fish, ginger etc, toss their creation on the hot plate, and then share and experiment.

On a completely unrelated note (hence the randomness), here's today's caption for discussion. Draw parallels to current events, ponder philosophy, or comment on face value. Be polite, and don't yell at each other. Or just be quiet.

Judge Leon M. Basile's words from 1959 when sentencing a white man that had (legally!) married a non-white woman: "Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix."

Further, as the state was defending it's decision: Thus, the State contends that, because its miscegenation statutes punish equally both the white and the Negro participants in an interracial marriage, these statutes, despite their reliance on racial classifications, do not constitute an invidious discrimination based upon race.

I'm not sure it works to conflate racial discrimination with reproductive discrimination.

I think an argument can be made both ways, but drawing analogies definitely enters the realm of populist soundbites while missing the underlying issues and their differences. And yes, I was led to the quote from an article regarding gay marriage. But I think I've seen enough discussion on that topic, and was curious to see what people would make of the above quote on its own right.

I gnaw on you anyway. ;)

Judge them? They're ridiculous. Unfortunately it's equally ridiculous to equate them meaningfully with any aspect of gay marriage because in no culture has race ever been an essential quality of the definition of marriage, while gender always has.

Okonomiyaki sounds far more interesting.
